Burglar alarm upgrades and replacements

Old panel, unreliable sensors or a system nobody in the house knows the code for? Keep what still works, replace what does not, and end up with an alarm you trust.

Plenty of homes around Wigan have an alarm on the wall that nobody uses. It was there when they moved in, it goes off at the wrong moments, or the company that fitted it closed years ago. An upgrade turns it back into something that protects you.

An upgrade does not always mean starting again. Often the existing wiring, some sensors and the bell box can stay, and only the panel and keypad are replaced. Sometimes a full replacement with a modern wireless system is quicker and better value. Dean looks at what you have and tells you honestly which makes sense.

Signs your alarm is due an upgrade

What an upgrade can include

A new panel and keypad. The heart of the system, with a clear keypad by the door, simple set and unset, and a proper part-set for night time.

New or extra sensors. Pet-tolerant sensors if the old ones keep catching the dog, and extra coverage for an extension, conservatory or garage.

A new bell box. A modern, bright, tamper-protected box with its own backup battery: the first thing a burglar sees.

New codes and a full test. Old codes cleared, your own codes set, every device tested, and a walk-through of how it all works.

Just moved in?

Inheriting an alarm is one of the most common reasons people ring DF Alarms. You do not know the codes, you do not know who fitted it, and you do not know whether it works. In most cases Dean can reset the system, set new codes and test it, so you can start using it straight away. If the panel turns out to be locked or past its best, he will explain your options and give you a clear price for an upgrade.

It is also worth doing for peace of mind: whoever had the house before you may have given the code to friends, family or a cleaner.

Alarm upgrade questions

All questions

Will you service or repair an alarm someone else fitted?

Yes. A lot of the alarms we look after were fitted by another company, sometimes one that no longer exists. Most systems can be serviced, repaired or brought back under your control, and if a panel really has had its day we will tell you honestly and quote for an upgrade.

I have moved house and do not know the alarm codes. Can you help?

Yes. This is one of the most common calls we get. In most cases we can reset the system and set up new codes for you, then test it so you know it works. If the panel is very old or locked by its original installer, we will explain your options, including an upgrade.

Should I have a wired or wireless alarm?

Both work well. Wired systems are very reliable and suit houses where cables can be hidden, such as during a renovation. Wireless systems go in faster with no cable runs or making good, which suits most finished homes. Dean fits both, and will look at your property and recommend what fits it best.

My house already has alarm cables. Can you use them?

Usually, yes. Old alarm cabling is often perfectly sound, so a new panel, keypad and sensors can be connected to it without running new cables. Dean tests the existing wiring first and tells you if any of it needs replacing.
