A burglar alarm does two jobs. The bell box on the front of the house tells an opportunist to try somewhere else, and if someone does get in, the siren, strobe and alarm make sure they do not stay long. Both only work if the system is designed properly and actually gets set.
That is where most off-the-shelf kits fall down. DF Alarms is Dean Foster, a Wigan alarm engineer with 18 years’ experience, and every installation starts with a look round your home: where the doors are, how someone would move through the house, where the pets sleep and how you live. Then you get a free, no-obligation quote for a system that fits.
What goes into a typical home alarm
Every house is different, but most systems are built from the same parts, chosen and placed for your home:
- Control panel with backup battery
- Keypad by the main door
- Motion sensors (pet-tolerant if needed)
- Contacts on the doors that matter
- External bell box with strobe
- Internal siren
- Part-set for night time
- Extra keypads or key fobs
Wired or wireless?
Wireless alarms are the usual choice for a finished home. Each sensor talks to the panel by radio, so there are no cables to run, no floorboards to lift and no making good. Most go in within a day, and sensors can be moved or added later if you extend or rearrange the house.
Wired alarms are very dependable and make sense when cables can be hidden, for example during a renovation or in a new build that was pre-wired. If your house already has alarm cabling, it can often be reused with a new panel and sensors.
Dean will tell you honestly which suits your home, and why.

How an installation works
Survey
Dean walks the house with you, looks at the doors, windows and routes through, and asks about pets and how you use the alarm.
Free quote
A clear, no-obligation price for the system he recommends, with no pressure and no add-ons you do not need.
Installation
Panel, keypad, sensors, contacts and bell box fitted neatly, with cables hidden where there are any.
Test and handover
Every device tested, codes set, and you are shown how to set, part-set and unset it until you are comfortable.
Placement is everything
A sensor in the wrong place either misses an intruder or goes off for no reason. Sensors are angled to cover the ways into and through the house, not pointed at radiators, windows or the stairs the cat sleeps on. Door contacts go on the doors a burglar would actually use, which in a lot of Wigan homes means the back door and patio doors as much as the front.
The bell box goes high on the most visible wall, where it can be seen from the street and is hard to reach. A modern bell box has its own backup battery and tamper protection, so pulling it off the wall sets the alarm off rather than silencing it.
Check your insurance first
Most home insurers are happy with a professionally fitted alarm, and some give a discount for one. A few policies, usually for high-value homes, specify an installer approved by the NSI or SSAIB. Read your policy before you book, and ask Dean if you are not sure what it means.

Alarm installation questions
All questionsWho will actually turn up?
Dean will. DF Alarms is Dean Foster, a security alarm engineer with 18 years’ experience. The person you speak to on the phone is the person who quotes, fits, services and repairs your system, so nothing gets lost between a salesman and a fitter.
Do you give free quotes?
Yes. Quotations are free and there is no obligation. For a new alarm or CCTV system, Dean will usually come and look at the property first, so the price is based on your actual home and not a guess.
Should I have a wired or wireless alarm?
Both work well. Wired systems are very reliable and suit houses where cables can be hidden, such as during a renovation. Wireless systems go in faster with no cable runs or making good, which suits most finished homes. Dean fits both, and will look at your property and recommend what fits it best.
Will my dog or cat set the alarm off?
It should not. Pet-tolerant sensors are designed to ignore smaller animals, and where they go and how they are angled matters as much as the sensor itself. Tell us about your pets when you get in touch and we will plan the system around them.
Does my insurer need a particular type of installer?
Most home insurers are happy with a professionally fitted and maintained alarm, and some give a discount for one. A few policies, usually for high-value homes, specify an installer approved by a body such as the NSI or SSAIB. Check your policy wording before you book, and ask us if you are not sure what it means.
