A house alarm that goes off for no reason is worse than no alarm at all. It annoys the neighbours, it gets switched off, and then it protects nobody. The good news is that almost every false alarm has a findable cause, and most are quick to fix once you know what it is.
DF Alarms repairs burglar alarms of every make around Wigan. Rather than just silencing it and resetting it, Dean reads the panel’s event log, tests each part of the system and puts right whatever is actually causing the problem.
Why house alarms go off for no reason
These are the causes we find most often:
Failing backup batteries
A tired battery in the panel or bell box can set the bell off, especially at night or in cold weather, and makes the panel beep with a fault.
Sensors seeing things
Pets, spiders, a heater coming on, curtains moving in a draught or sunlight through a window can all trigger a sensor in the wrong spot.
Door and window contacts
A door that has dropped or a magnet that has moved can open the circuit, so the alarm thinks the door has been opened.
Tamper faults
A loose cover, a damaged cable or damp in the bell box can trigger the tamper circuit, which sounds the alarm even when unset.
Wireless problems
Flat sensor batteries or a device losing contact with the panel cause supervision faults and beeping on wireless systems.
Old age
Panels and sensors do wear out. If a system has had its day, we will say so honestly and quote for an upgrade.
Alarm going off right now?
Enter your code at the keypad. On most systems that silences the siren. If the bell box keeps sounding after the panel is unset, it is usually its own battery or a tamper fault.
Do not pull the bell box off the wall or cut its cable: a modern bell box has its own battery and treats that as an attack.
Note what the keypad says, or take a photo of it. Fault messages and the event log help Dean find the problem faster.
Then ring 07506 518 646 and tell him what is happening.

Keep it from happening again
Once the fault is fixed, the best protection against it coming back is a yearly alarm service. Every service includes 12 months’ free call-out cover for faults (parts not included), so if something else goes wrong in the following year, the call-out is covered.
If the codes are lost or the panel is locked by a previous installer, see alarm upgrades: it can usually be reset or brought back under your control.

Alarm repair questions
All questionsWhat is the 12 months’ call-out cover?
Every service comes with 12 months’ free call-out cover for faults. If your alarm develops a fault in the year after we service it, we come out without a call-out charge. Parts are not included, and we will always tell you what a part costs before fitting it.
Will you service or repair an alarm someone else fitted?
Yes. A lot of the alarms we look after were fitted by another company, sometimes one that no longer exists. Most systems can be serviced, repaired or brought back under your control, and if a panel really has had its day we will tell you honestly and quote for an upgrade.
Why does my house alarm keep going off for no reason?
The usual causes are a flat or failing backup battery, a sensor that is dusty, faulty or picking up pets, spiders or a heater, a door or window contact that has worked loose, or damp getting into the bell box. A tamper fault can also set it off. We test each part of the system to find the real cause, rather than just resetting it.
I have moved house and do not know the alarm codes. Can you help?
Yes. This is one of the most common calls we get. In most cases we can reset the system and set up new codes for you, then test it so you know it works. If the panel is very old or locked by its original installer, we will explain your options, including an upgrade.
Will my dog or cat set the alarm off?
It should not. Pet-tolerant sensors are designed to ignore smaller animals, and where they go and how they are angled matters as much as the sensor itself. Tell us about your pets when you get in touch and we will plan the system around them.
My Visonic or Orisec alarm keeps beeping. What does it mean?
A beeping panel is usually reporting a trouble condition rather than an alarm: a low battery in a sensor or the panel, a wireless device that has lost contact, a power cut, or a tamper fault. The keypad normally shows which. Dean can read the fault, fix the cause and clear it so it stops.
